Choosing the Right Visa: Key Differences Between Visa on Arrival and Tourist Visit Visa

Apr 17, 2025 | Immigration, Indoneisan Visa

Planning a trip to Indonesia? Whether you’re visiting for tourism, seeing family, or just transiting, it’s important to understand the difference between a Visa on Arrival (VoA) and a Tourist Visit Visa (VKW)—two options that may seem similar but serve different needs.

Based on the Minister of Law and Human Rights Decree No. M.HH-02.GR.01.04 of 2023, both visas are designed for short-term visits such as holidays, family visits, or layovers. However, the application process, eligibility, and duration of stay differ significantly.

“At a glance, VoA and VKW may seem to offer the same functions, but there are crucial differences travelers need to know,” said Felucia Sengky, Director of Immigration Traffic.

Here’s a breakdown of 7 key differences between VoA and VKW:

1. Visa Index

  • VoA uses the B1 index

  • VKW is categorized under the C1 index

2. Country Eligibility

  • VoA is only available to nationals from 97 countries

  • VKW can be applied for by citizens of any country

3. Length of Stay

  • VoA offers an initial 30-day stay

  • VKW grants up to 60 days from the start

4. Visa Cost

  • VoA: IDR 500,000

  • VKW: IDR 1,500,000
(Three times the cost, but double the stay period)

5. Application Method

  • VoA: Can be obtained upon arrival at Indonesian airports/seaports or online via evisa.imigrasi.go.id

  • VKW: Must be applied for online only; applicants are required to create an account first

6. Approval Process

  • VoA: Instant approval, no account or sponsor required

  • VKW: Requires sponsorship and may take up to 5 working days for approval. The visa will be emailed to both the applicant and the sponsor

7. Extension Options

  • VoA: Can be extended once, for another 30 days

  • VKW: Can be extended multiple times, up to a maximum of 180 days

“Make sure to choose the visa that fits your travel plan best. If you need further assistance, the live chat feature at www.imigrasi.go.id is available Monday to Friday, 09:00–15:00 WIB,” Sengky added.
